Misty Castle

Winter storm Janus gave me two snow days. I wasn't able to go to work because the roads were terribly slippery. So I enjoyed my warm home, my kids and my painting. From time to time I love to paint something unreal. A fantasy world without any references to real life.

I began by drawing it in my sketchbook then I used watercolors. I knew I'd like to see the road around the tall castle walls leading somewhere to the main gate. The mist from the moat was perfect for separating the foreground and the background. Yellow touches around the windows added liveliness. The feeling of someone's presence within the cold and harsh walls. The rest of my painting contains different tones of gray - the color of a foggy morning.
The wagon under the bare tree is the main point of interest. The viewer begins to wonder where this character is going and what his or her life looks like.

Yellow Hut

It has been raining for 3 days now in Maryland. All the snow unfortunately is gone but, not on my paintings. Here is a lose watercolor sketch of a wintry scene.
To paint this picture I used my 2 favorite colors: ultramarine blue and burned yellow. Mixed together they gave me all kinds of gray tones. In the middle of this image I placed the hut. It has a roof covered in snow and a cheerful smoke slowly rising from the chimney. The yellow color on the gray background is very powerful. It is hard not to notice the house partially hidden behind the spruce. I added yellow grass to balance the color of the house and to brighten the moody landscape.

Winter Mountains

This is a watercolor version of my previous pencil sketch. I made a quick video from painting process. You can see it on  YouTube

It's snowing now on the East Coast and everything is turning white. Since everyone is safe at home, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Winter Mountains - sketch

Quick sketch of imaginary scene. I hope I'll have some time between Christmas and New Year to go skiing.

Wintery Sky

A quick sketch but with a little imagination we can travel to the dream world. Let's walk on this wintery path together. The snow is heavy and up to our knees. It is not easy but step by step we're closer to the snow-covered hut. Happy to know we're almost there. Let's change these cold walls into a warm home. Let's bring that fireplace to life. Can you see the forest in the back? Although we are tired we have to go there fast and gather firewood. A lot of it. Another storm is rolling in.
First snowflakes melt in the smoke from our chimney. Yes, we made it in time :)

Pots with Flag

I'm done with this one. White flowers were quick to paint. I just painted around them. I like painting bricks. Little shadow here and there creates 3 dimensional view. Blue flowers look great on yellow. Every color goes well with yellow. The most stressful was the flag. I'm glad that I decided to make it shiny because you cannot see how the stars are crooked.
Now I have to scan it. It will be painful because this painting is 13x19in and my scanner has 12in in its widest point. I wonder if 4 scans will be enough. Will see…

My camera changed colors to more yellowish down there.
Painting is fun.

I transferred my drawings to the watercolor paper. I used watercolor pencils; they don’t smudge as much as regular pencils. Then I used masking fluid to cover edges of my flowers and I painted the background. Background is always unpredictable. This time it surprised me nicely.

I'm pretty happy with this drawing. I’ll be painting it with watercolors. My son said that the flag is not right but for me it is good enough. Sorry kids, you can’t learn how our flag looks like from my drawings
